HIGHEST POINT

A grand finish.

A grand finish.

Riders pedal from Canberra to Melbourne, aiming for a grand finish rather than a grand depart. This is not a race but an adventure, and your departure date is up to you. The goal is to reach Melbourne — and share a brew with the other riders at the finish.

Developed in 2016 by Dan Hunt, the Hunt 1000 links Canberra to Melbourne and traverses some of Australia’s most beautiful high country. The route takes in amazing campsites and historic alpine huts, a limited number of resupply points, challenging hike-a-bike sections, and river and creek crossings. Each year the route changes to create a new adventure through new trails.

Encompassing the Kosciuszko, Alpine and Namadgi National Parks, the Hunt 1000 takes you into the heart of these remote and uniquely Australian alpine wilderness areas. You’ll spend hundreds of kilometres on top of the world — but what goes up must come down, and you’ll work hard for those high trail views.

Be prepared

Be prepared

Anything can happen out there. Riders must carry a SPOT or Garmin inReach satellite tracker with an active subscription. Be ready for all weather — it can snow in the high country even in summer — and for river crossings that may not be passable after heavy rain.
